First Impressions of Cornell
Hi, I’m Funmi…
HumEc, HD, High Rise 5
Spout off answers to automatic questions
What was that? Come again? I-R-A? N-I-R?
Never heard so many odd names in my life
Such diversity in one university, they said
Ads line the walkways in colored chalk,
many creatively designed, some not:
Tryouts for Cayuga’s Waiters,
The Class Notes, Nothing But Treble
Recycling signs and bins everywhere,
I am being brainwashed
Going to see the comedian tonight…who with?
Everyone’s at Collegetown and the rest are asleep
Where are all my “friends”
facebook was a waste of time
First week of classes
Breakfast with scrambled eggs, sausage,
steamed vegetables, pancakes and
desert worth every penny
Take the footbridge to Kennedy
They said it would be beautiful
Sweat dripping, legs throbbing, how much farther?
Get there just as people step off the bus
They said sit in the front to be noticed
Professors seem nice…have to learn their names
doubt if they’ll ever know mine
Pages one through what?! Due when?!
Grab a quick lunch on my way home…
How much was that sandwich?!
Have to pay to print?!
How much for laundry?
Those books cost what?!
Raindrops pelt me home
Carry an umbrella everywhere, they said
Better dressers, writers, Christians, musicians
Too many smart, good looking people
Can’t compete, don’t want to…I choose average

Who: Risley Residential College, the Cornell Science Fiction Society, U.S.S. Accord, and anyone else who wants to be there
What: Firefly Marathon
When: Saturday, September 17, 12PM-12AM
Where: The TV Room in Risley Hall's first floor
Why: Because we adore Joss Whedon
Risley Residential College presents a Firefly Marathon, co-sponsored by the Cornell Science Fiction Society and U.S.S. Accord. Come join us for twelve hours of sci-fi/western fun.
For those who don't know, Firefly was a short-lived science fiction television series that aired on FOX in fall 2002. It lasted 15 episodes before it was canceled--and three episodes never even made it to air in the original run. The series had a strong fan following, though, due in part to the fact that it was created by Joss Whedon, who was also creator of such other cult classic TV shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. The complete Firefly series was released on DVD in 2003, and sold really well. Universal Studios was so impressed with these DVD sales that they decided to greenlight a feature film sequel to the TV show, called Serenity. This film is due to hit theaters on September 30.
To prepare for, and celebrate, the release of Serenity, we will be watching the entire run of Firefly, in its original intended airing order, straight through in one sitting. All 15 commercial-free episodes. All in one day. Can you handle it? If so, join us!
Come for an hour. Come for a few episodes. Come for the whole thing. You know you want to.
Somewhere in the middle of this whole thing, we'll probably order some pizza. So if you want to eat, bring some cash, probably around $5 per person. Also feel free to bring some soda and/or snacks to share.
Risley Hall is located on Cornell University's North Campus, on Thurston Avenue across the street from Balch Hall. Enter the building through the front doors in the middle of the building; if the doors are locked, knock and somebody should let you in. Turn right after entering; the TV Room is located immediately on the left. If you run into the dining hall, you've gone too far.
Driving in for the event? Parking is most likely to be available on Thurston Avenue. Ignore the parking meters, since it's all free on weekends.
I hope to see you there.

Hi, my name is Nina Glatthorn and I'm a rising sophomore. I wanted to congratulate everyone on being accepted to Cornell, and to tell you all about Wilderness Reflections!
Wilderness Reflections is an organization that sends out student-run backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, and moutnain biking trips during the weeks before orientation. By going on a Wilderness Reflections trip, you will learn more about the backcountry, yourself, Cornell, and - most of all - you will make lasting friendships! My WR trip was amazing, and best of all, I made 7 great friends even before orietation.
While certain trips are full already, there is still lots of room for you on a WR trip! Please visit our website, www.coe.cornell.edu/wr , or read our brochure if you are interested.
Some very basic questions, like "What do we eat?" and "Are WR trips fun?" are answered at the following site: http://classof2009.cornell.edu/cms/cont
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me!

Hey everyone my name is Teresa and I am going into my senior year in highschool (in florida-- blah) but I need to look into colleges early to decide if I need to apply early decision. I am really really interested in Cornell especially due to the fact that Cornell's vet school is number one in the entire country.. seeing that I plan to become a veterinary surgeon, I find this fact to be very interesting. So if anyone has any advice or knowledge about the college it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks..

Hi. My name is Maya. I was accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences as well.
I have joined this community in the hopes of finding out more about the university. I am facing a difficult decision right now. I need to decide between UC Berkeley and Cornell (and UPenn, which is no.3 right now among my choices, due to its unsafe location/Philly and its hyped-up reputation via Wharton Business School. I'm not studying business, so I thought it wouldn't be a good match for me. I'm interested in Chemistry and I intend to major in it to start off. northwestern and uchicago are options, but not very appealing ones right now (thus, I eliminated them), as they aren't too far from home and i feel like getting away right now.
I'm also interested in English (writing), Japanese, Spanish, among other things.
and I hope I learn more about the programs, the lifestyle, etc. at Cornell. I hesitate to say this, but right now I am learning toward going to California. I was rejected from Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton, so i am in a rather.. 'fuck you ivy league' mood. I love the climate in Ca. and Jamba Juice, which I doubt is in Ithaca. Cornell is f-ing BEAUTIFUL, but I think I need urban stimuli. I'm a fairly unstable person (i've contemplated various suicide methods in the past and attempted it just two days ago). My friends are worried that I may jump off the infamous bridge there and take a plunge into the abyss.. of a waterfall? or something along those lines. cornell provides the private, small class size education that I'm interested in, but it lacks the nice sunny weather that I desperately need right now.
ugh, such a difficult decision.
I did not even relaize that I did not put down interests. I put in some, but if there are any u want to add you can comment on this what you wnat added or log in and change them yourself. I am sure the pa$sword can be easily figured out. Or comment and I can IM u with it. -Melissa

Music: Honestly, I like everything, except country. Right now I'm stuck on Ben Folds and Grease (because that's our musical this year). My most played list at the moment contains half of the Garden State soundtrack, Damien Rice, The Roots, Scissor Sisters, Best of Gershwin, and Maná.
Books: All-time favorites: One Hundred Years of Solitude, To Kill a Mockingbird, Walk Two Moons, Pride and Prejudice, Poisonwood Bible, and Heirs to the Past. Am currently reading Mi País Inventado by Isabelle Allende.
Movies: Sleepless in Seattle, Garden State, Amar Te Duele, Lost in Translation, Monsoon Wedding, Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, Besieged, Office Space, The Godfather, Butterfly, Streetcar Named Desire... oh man, way too many.
I really, really like Cornell but am still deciding between Carnegie Mellon University, Bates and Cornell. Any tips?
